About

Hurinin, People of the Sea tells the story of the marginalised Topnaar (ǂAonin) community of Namibia, whose ocean-based heritage was disrupted during colonial rule — and whose voices remain largely excluded from contemporary ocean governance.

Commissioned by One Ocean Hub, the film traces the community's efforts to reclaim recognition for their knowledge, culture, and rights — from centuries-old fishing traditions to songs, poems, and dances that now survive in the memories of a few elders. Through close collaboration with the Topnaar community and arts-based research led by local leaders, the film documents a process of reconnection: bridging Indigenous knowledge and international policy spaces to foster more inclusive ocean decision-making. Warm thanks to the Topnaar community for helping to make this film.
